Opel, a subsidiary of the Stellantis Group, unveiled the updated Opel Astra, in hatchback and Sports Tourer versions.

The mid-life update of the Opel Astra comes 4 years after the launch of the sixth generation Opel Astra (L), which was launched in 2021 and was then based on Stellantis platforms for the first time.

Updated Opel Astra design

The model remains easily recognizable, with changes mainly focused on the front end, where the Opel Visor grille now includes wider LED lighting surrounding the illuminated Opel logo. Together, these elements form what the company calls the Opel Compass, a new design identity that the brand will adopt across its various models.

The Astra also received a redesigned front bumper, which includes glossy black touches between the air vents, while the side and rear design remained without major changes, with the addition of new 17- and 18-inch wheels that give the car a more modern look.

In addition to the five-door hatchback version, Opel also applied the update to the Astra Sports Tourer version, and its competitors in the compact wagon category include the Peugeot 308 SW, Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, Hyundai i30 Wagon, Volkswagen Golf Variant, Seat Leon ST and Skoda Octavia Combi.

The interior of the updated Astra

As for the interior, it remains essentially unchanged, but the ergonomically designed Inteli-Sets, which were previously exclusive to higher trim levels, are now standard on all models.

These seats are covered in a recycled and recyclable material called Re-New Net, with options such as multi-stage heating, massage and memory functions.

Although the Astra retains two 10-inch screens, Opel confirms that the cockpit and the infotainment system interface have become clearer and easier to use.

What about the performance and power specifications of the updated Astra?

Opel did not reveal precise details about the engine range, but it is expected to be identical to the updated Peugeot 308.

Options include a 1.5-liter diesel engine generating 129 horsepower, a 1.2-liter mild hybrid turbo gasoline engine generating 143 horsepower, along with a plug-in hybrid version with a 1.6-liter engine with a total power of 192 horsepower, as well as a fully electric version with 154 horsepower.

The electric Opel Astra benefits from a larger battery with a capacity of 58 kWh, which increases the driving range according to the WLTP standard by 34 kilometers to 454 kilometers, while supporting the V2L function to supply energy to external devices.

The updated Opel Astra is scheduled to appear for the first time in front of the public at the Brussels Motor Show on January 9, before being launched in European markets, with prices and availability details to be announced later.

Competitors of the updated Opel Astra

The compact car faces strong competition led by the Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308, along with the Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30, at a time when traditional models such as the Ford Focus and Renault Megane have recently left this category.
